the area

The villa is set in the Tavira region of the Algarve. Tavira is the cultural centre of the eastern Algarve (Solavento) and as the villa is only 20 minutes away, you are sure to catch one of the events on Tavira's annual events calendar. Be it folk dancing or singing, annual religious processions, art exhibitions at the 'old market' or at the Palacio da Galeria, or simply sitting in the central gardens like the local Portuguese do, you will enjoy yourself! Furthermore, Tavira has an old 'Moors' quarter with Moorish architecture and castle ruins. Not to be missed, the Igrejas (churches) of the area also need a visit.

The Moors controlled Tavira from around 743AD - 1153AD. Tavira as a town (declared a Cidade in 1153AD) is revered by the Portuguese locals for its historical significance, charm, originality and lovely 'Rio Gilao' flowing through the centre.

The English owners live nearby and can offer any assistance that you may need. In addition they also own the nicest bar for miles around.

Beaches

The nearest beach is at Manta Rota approx 10 minute drive away. This beautiful sandy beach is rarely, if ever, crowded. There are several bars lining the beach for drinks, food and that must have ice cream. Parking is free and along the sea front.

Golf

There are 3 superb 18 hole golf courses within close proximity to Casa Ronaldo. All 3 accept non members and clubs and carts can be hired. There are many other courses within a 45 minute drive away in the Quinta do Laga area. Recently opened in July 2007 is the fabulous Jack Nicholas designed course. It is said to be the largest, best equipped course on the Algarve and only 3 kilometres from the villa. The thought is mouth watering for all golfers.

Places to visit.

To the west is Tavira the main town in the area and to the east, Vila Real de Santa Antonio and just beyond the Spanish border and Ayamonte. Both towns are beautiful in their own right and boast a large variety of shops and restaurants. The towns are separated by the Spanish border and a river, a cheap regular ferry is available to transport you across.( don't forget the 1 hour time difference)
